The U-shaped inflatable covers the uprights of the windscreen and the area where the wipers are fixed to prevent injuries in the event of a collision.
The airbag was developed by Volvo and will be fitted to the new V40 model.
“It should be effective in most frontal impacts.”
They trigger the bonnet to open and the airbag to burst out within a split second.
Mr Broberg added: “The challenge was designing an airbag that is exposed to the weather.
“It was necessary as part of our vision that by 2020 nobody should be killed or injured in a Volvo.”
Nearly 6,000 pedestrians were killed or seriously hurt on roads in 2010, many through head and chest injuries from the uprights.
Road safety campaigner Tony Armstrong welcomed the development.
But he said: “Drivers still need to ensure they are taking care and paying attention.”
